Celebrating Culture Through Education: Alexandra Cetares
Global Teaching Partners
In a world that thrives on diversity, education plays a pivotal role in bridging cultures. Alexandra Cetares embodies this idea, sharing her Colombian heritage and fostering a positive environment in her classroom.
The Spark of Teaching
Alexandra’s path to teaching was a natural one. From a young age, she found joy in explaining various topics, reveling in the moment when a student’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Learning came easily to me,” she recalls, “and sharing that knowledge made me feel wise and fulfilled.” Surrounded by education throughout her childhood—thanks to her schooling in a pedagogical institution—Alexandra was inspired to become a beacon of knowledge for those around her.
A Journey to the United States
With a rich cultural tapestry to share, Alexandra sought to teach in the United States. “Colombia is a gem filled with music, dance, and traditions that deserve to be known worldwide,” she says. As a Teacher Ambassador, she recognized the unique opportunity to blend her cultural narrative with a new environment, enriching both herself and her students. “English was the perfect element to achieve all my dreams, so this experience was the one that gave me all what I was asking for” she reflects. This teaching experience became a transformative chapter, allowing her to not only share her heritage but also grow personally and professionally.
The Importance of Dual-Language Education
For Alexandra, dual-language education is more than just a teaching method; it’s a vital pathway to cultural immersion. “Every child is a mini-world representing their cultural heritage,” she explains. This approach not only facilitates language acquisition but also fosters curiosity about diverse cultures. In her classroom, students are encouraged to explore and celebrate their backgrounds, creating future ambassadors of their traditions. “It opens wide doors to different countries,” she says, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural activities that extend beyond the classroom walls.
Cultivating a Sense of Belonging
One of Alexandra’s proudest achievements is the nurturing environment she has created in her classroom. “I strive to make everyone feel like they belong,” she states. This sense of family allows students to thrive, connecting with peers and teachers while developing their language skills. “When children realize their language acquisition is increasing, they feel motivated to attend school, not just for knowledge but for the happiness they find in our classroom community.”
Engaging with the Community
Beyond the classroom, Alexandra actively shares her culture within the community through various activities linked to the dual-language program. From performing traditional Colombian dances to promoting Latin songs and cuisine, she ensures that her heritage is celebrated. “What fills me with pride is the community’s involvement in these activities,” she shares. The anticipation and excitement from families reflect a growing appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that contribute to their local environment.
Leaving a Lasting Impact
As Alexandra looks toward the future, her aspirations are clear. “I hope to leave a footprint on the school community, fostering strong and meaningful learning experiences,” she shares. By instilling a sense of curiosity about the world beyond their borders, she dreams that her students will one day visit Colombia and fall in love with its traditions, just as she has.
Alexandra Cetares’ journey as a teacher and cultural ambassador highlights the profound impact that education can have in connecting diverse cultures. Through her dedication and passion, she not only enriches her students’ lives but also celebrates the vibrant heritage of Colombia, inspiring a future generation to embrace the beauty of cultural diversity.
